LLM with SQE 2026: Every Programme Compared
An LLM (Master of Laws) with SQE preparation is a postgraduate degree that combines academic legal study with structured preparation for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination. You cover the substantive law and the exam technique in one programme, typically over 12–24 months.
This guide covers every major LLM SQE programme, costs, who each one suits, and whether the LLM route is actually worth it compared to standalone SQE prep.
What Is an LLM with SQE?
An LLM with SQE typically includes:
- SQE1 preparation: study of all 13 functional legal knowledge areas tested by SQE1 — business law, contract, tort, criminal law, land law, trusts, property practice, wills and probate, dispute resolution, solicitors' accounts, legal services, constitutional and administrative law
- SQE2 preparation: practical legal skills — client interviewing, advocacy, legal drafting, legal research, case and matter analysis
- Academic modules: often includes additional study in a legal specialism (commercial law, human rights, international law, etc.)
- Mock assessments: timed practice under exam conditions
The academic element gives you the LLM qualification. The SQE prep element prepares you for the actual exams. The exam fees are usually paid separately to the SRA.
Who Offers LLM SQE Programmes?
University of Law (ULaw)
The most well-known LLM SQE programme in the UK. ULaw trains more SQE candidates than any other provider.
- Programme: LLM Legal Practice (SQE1 and SQE2)
- Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time
- Delivery: on-campus (London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Guildford, Exeter, Nottingham) and online
- Cost: £15,150 (full-time), £18,850 (part-time online with additional modules)
- SQE1 pass rate: 64% (above the 53% national average)
- SQE2 pass rate: 89% (above the 80% national average)
- Best for: candidates who want the most recognised name on their CV, or whose employer specifies ULaw
BPP University
The second-largest SQE provider. Strong City law firm relationships.
- Programme: LLM Legal Practice with SQE
- Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time
- Delivery: on-campus (London, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham) and online
- Cost: from £12,000 (varies by campus and programme variant)
- Best for: candidates sponsored by law firms (many City firms send trainees to BPP), or those wanting strong firm connections
- Note: BPP does not publish overall SQE pass rates independently. Self-reported rates suggest above-average performance.
Nottingham Law School
A well-regarded LLM SQE programme at the University of Nottingham's law school.
- Programme: LLM with SQE
- Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time
- Delivery: on-campus (Nottingham) and blended
- Cost: approximately £10,500–£13,000
- Best for: candidates outside London looking for a campus-based LLM at a lower price point than ULaw
City University of London (The City Law School)
- Programme: LLM with SQE preparation
- Duration: 12 months full-time
- Delivery: on-campus (London)
- Cost: approximately £12,000–£14,000
- Best for: London-based candidates who want a university-branded LLM alongside SQE prep
Online LLM SQE Options
Several providers offer fully online LLM SQE programmes, which suit candidates working alongside their studies:
- ULaw online LLM: part-time, 24 months, up to £18,850
- BPP online LLM: part-time delivery available
- Nottingham online: blended learning with online elements
Online LLM programmes typically cost more and take longer than full-time campus programmes, but allow you to maintain employment while studying.
LLM SQE vs Standalone SQE Prep: Which Is Better?
| Factor | LLM with SQE | Standalone SQE prep (e.g. BARBRI) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | £12,000–£18,850 + £4,908 exam fees | £5,899 + £4,908 exam fees |
| Duration | 12–24 months | 6–12 months |
| Legal knowledge | Built into programme | Assumed — you must bring it |
| Qualification awarded | LLM (master's degree) | None |
| Employer perception | Strong — LLM recognised | Variable |
| Best for | Non-law grads, career changers, employer-sponsored | Law grads with existing knowledge base |
The core difference: standalone SQE prep assumes you already know the law. An LLM teaches you the law and then prepares you for the exam. If you have a law degree, standalone prep may be sufficient. If you don't, or if your law degree is from overseas, the LLM route substantially reduces your knowledge gap risk.
Does the LLM Improve Your Pass Rate?
Indirectly, yes. ULaw's SQE1 pass rate (64%) is 11 percentage points above the national average (53%). BPP performs similarly. Part of this is selection effect — LLM candidates tend to be more prepared and motivated — but the structured knowledge foundation also matters.
For non-law graduates in particular, arriving at SQE1 having systematically studied all 13 subject areas through an LLM is a meaningful advantage over arriving having read materials independently.
Funding an LLM with SQE
Postgraduate loan: the UK government's postgraduate master's loan covers up to £13,000 of an LLM programme for eligible students. This does not cover the SQE exam fees (paid separately to Kaplan/SRA).
Employer sponsorship: many law firms sponsor the LLM with SQE for their trainees and paralegals. If you have a training contract offer or are employed at a firm, check whether they have a preferred provider relationship with BPP or ULaw.
Self-funding: if paying yourself, factor in the full cost: LLM fees + SQE exam fees (£4,908) + living costs. Total investment for a self-funded ULaw LLM route is typically £20,000–£24,000.
See our SQE funding guide for postgraduate loan eligibility and provider scholarship options.
Is the LLM with SQE Worth It?
For most non-law graduates: yes, if you can access employer sponsorship or a postgraduate loan, the structured pathway is worth the premium over standalone SQE prep.
For law graduates: probably not. If you have a UK law degree and solid knowledge of the SQE1 subjects, a standalone prep course (BARBRI at £5,899, or ULaw/BPP standalone SQE prep) is more cost-efficient. The LLM's main value is the knowledge foundation it builds — law graduates already have this.
For overseas-qualified lawyers: the LLM SQE route may be the clearest path, particularly if your legal training is from a civil law jurisdiction. ULaw and BPP have specific programmes designed for internationally qualified lawyers.
LLM SQE or MA Law + Standalone Prep?
An alternative to the LLM with SQE is:
- Complete an MA Law / GDL (Graduate Diploma in Law) — 1 year, £8,000–£12,000
- Then add a standalone SQE prep course — 6–12 months, £5,899–£12,000
Total cost: £14,000–£24,000 over approximately 18–24 months
This route costs roughly the same as an LLM and takes similar time, but gives you more flexibility to choose separate providers for the legal education and the SQE prep. The LLM route is more integrated and typically better regarded by employers.

Key takeaway
An LLM with SQE integrates legal education and SQE exam preparation into a single postgraduate programme. It is the most popular route for non-law graduates and career changers. ULaw and BPP dominate the market. Cost ranges from £12,000 to £18,850 plus SQE exam fees (£4,908). The main advantage over standalone SQE prep is the structured knowledge foundation — you study the law before learning how to apply it under exam conditions.
