2026 SQE Provider Landscape: What's Actually Changed

Right, let's talk about what's really going on in the SQE provider world in 2026. If you're trying to choose a course, you've probably noticed things have shifted quite a bit since the SQE launched back in 2021.

The Big Players Are Still Dominating

BPP and University of Law basically own the market. Between them, they've got about 60–70% of all SQE students. They've been training solicitors for decades and have the law firm connections that matter when you're job hunting later.

BPP's the one everyone talks about. At £12,200 for online study, it's not cheap, but their pass rates are genuinely better than average. Plus, if you're in London and serious about City law, BPP's where most of your competition will be studying.

University of Law is pricier - £15,150 online - but they've got 12+ locations across the UK. If you're not London-based and want occasional face-to-face teaching, ULaw makes more sense.

The Budget Disruptor: BARBRI

Then there's BARBRI at £5,899. It's self-study with video lectures and question banks. If you're disciplined, it's perfectly good material. It's particularly suited to career changers with savings, international lawyers who study independently, and anyone with strong self-motivation.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Provider Choice

Your provider matters way less than your effort. BPP students pass at higher rates - but that's partly self-selection. The students who can afford £12k+ are often more prepared anyway.

Bottom Line for 2026

  • Your learning style - structured vs self-directed
  • Your location - London vs regional
  • Your budget - use the cost calculator above to check monthly payments
  • Your work situation - full-time paralegal needs flexible options
