Does this role count as QWE? Quick checklist
  • The work must be legal in nature - research, drafting, client work, case management
  • It must be supervised by a qualified solicitor (or CILEX lawyer) who will confirm your experience
  • It does not have to be at a law firm - in-house legal roles count too
  • You can split QWE across up to 4 employers - it all adds up to 2 years
  • Part-time work counts - 2 years full-time equivalent (e.g. 4 years at 50%)

Red Flags to Watch For

Not all paralegal roles offer quality QWE. Here's how to spot poor opportunities and what questions to ask.

Warning Signs of Poor QWE Opportunities

  • Purely administrative role: If the job description is 95% filing, photocopying, mail sorting, and reception work with little substantive legal work, it won't develop the competencies needed for SQE qualification.
  • No solicitor supervision: QWE must be supervised by a qualified solicitor or CILEX lawyer. If there's no supervisor willing to confirm your experience, it doesn't count.
  • Vague job descriptions: "General legal support" or "various duties" without specifics about legal research, drafting, client contact, or case management suggests unclear expectations.
  • Unrealistic salary for "experience": Roles offering £16k-£18k in London for "experienced paralegal" often have high turnover and poor training/development.
  • No training or development mentioned: Firms genuinely invested in paralegals mention training, mentorship, or career progression. Complete silence on this is a red flag.
  • Rapid job churn: If the same firm is constantly advertising for paralegals (check job boards over weeks), it suggests retention problems-often due to poor working conditions or misleading job descriptions.

Critical Questions to Ask in Interviews

  • "Will I be supervised by a qualified solicitor who can confirm my QWE?" Get a clear yes. Ask who specifically will supervise you and whether they understand SQE QWE requirements.
  • "What does a typical day look like for this role?" Look for mentions of legal research, drafting, client work, case management-not just admin tasks.
  • "What percentage of my time will be substantive legal work vs administrative?" Aim for at least 60-70% legal work. Some admin is normal, but it shouldn't dominate.
  • "Have you confirmed QWE for paralegals in the past?" Firms familiar with SQE QWE process will say yes. New firms may need educating but should be willing to learn.
  • "What training and development opportunities are available?" Good firms offer in-house training, external courses, or study time for SQE prep.
  • "What's the career progression path for paralegals here?" Firms that value paralegals will have examples of progression-whether to associate roles, training contracts, or senior paralegal positions.

How to Spot Roles That Count as QWE

According to the SRA's QWE requirements, qualifying work experience must allow you to develop some or all of the following competencies:

Look for roles involving:

  • ✓ Legal research and analysis
  • ✓ Drafting legal documents
  • ✓ Client communication
  • ✓ Case/matter management
  • ✓ Applying legal knowledge
  • ✓ Professional judgment
  • ✓ Working with others
  • ✓ Managing yourself

Good sign: Job descriptions explicitly mention these activities. The role involves direct legal work under supervision, not just administrative support.

Bad sign: Job focuses solely on administrative tasks (filing, photocopying, scheduling) with no mention of legal analysis, research, drafting, or client work.
