About these SQE1 practice questions
These questions are written independently - not by a course provider trying to sell you a prep course. Each question is modelled on the SRA's official sample question style: a realistic legal scenario, five plausible answer options (A–E), one unambiguously correct answer, and a full explanation citing the applicable law and cases.
Use these questions alongside your main question bank, not instead of it. The SRA question bank is the gold standard, but independent practice helps you identify gaps and test your reasoning without the pressure of a timed mock.
SQE1 exam format: what to expect
SQE1 consists of two papers - Functioning Legal Knowledge 1 (FLK1) and Functioning Legal Knowledge 2 (FLK2) - each sat on a separate day. Each paper contains 180 multiple-choice questions, all in the same format: a scenario (usually 2–5 sentences describing a real-world legal situation) followed by a question and five answer options. There is no negative marking.

Frequently asked questions
What score do I need to pass SQE1?
The SRA does not publish a fixed pass mark - it uses standard setting to determine the passing score for each sitting. Historically, the pass mark has been around 56–58% of questions correct, but this varies. Candidates are generally advised to aim for 70%+ in practice to have a comfortable margin.
How are SQE1 questions structured?
Each question presents a factual scenario (usually a client or legal situation) followed by a single question and five answer options labelled A–E. You must select one answer. Questions test both knowledge of the law and the ability to apply it - rote learning is not sufficient.
Can I resit SQE1?
Yes. You can resit the whole of SQE1, or resit individual papers (FLK1 or FLK2) separately. A single paper resit costs £967 (2026); the full SQE1 costs £1,934. There is no limit on the number of attempts.
How is Ethics & Professional Conduct tested?
Ethics is not a standalone paper - it is embedded throughout both FLK1 and FLK2. Approximately 25% of questions across both papers relate to ethics and professional conduct, based on the SRA Standards and Regulations and the SRA Code of Conduct.
